Hyundai has downsized its engine in the Elantra for 2011, to 1. However, once the October 2011 sales numbers came in, it looked that the former champions of the segment had once again taken their lead. Hyundai boasts that the nav system has the largest screen size in this class. For the price, its beautiful. Up close, the front marker lights extend to a point almost directly over the front wheel center—and to the front of the cowl—and the windshield that looks like it might possibly be the steepest of any small car. Vehicle cannot leave the parking lot so a full test drive or trip to your mechanic to check out the vehicle is not possible.
There are a few very nice, thoughtful touches in the Elantra. Backseat space is a little bit better than what we're accustomed to in this size of vehicle—in terms of legroom—but the shortage of headroom just like the Cruze and Civic keeps it from being a true mid-size offering. November saw the Honda Civic wrestle the number-one spot away from the rival Toyota Corolla. The exterior builds on the automaker's Fluidic Scupture theme that applies to the mid-size Sonata, but in the Elantra it's a little more crisp and aggressive, a little more athletic. Hyundai also reports another successful month, selling 52,051 units, with the new Veloster already in high demand.

Ride quality is excellent; the Elantra soaks up road noise better than most small cars, and wind noise is well-muted at 70 mph—at the level you'd expect in a mid-size sedan. Moving up to the Limited adds athletic 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps and turn signals on the body-color heated power mirrors. From the back you might mistake the Elantra for its large Sonata sibling; but with the Elantra an even smoother take. Hyundai's design direction with these sedans makes them standouts, but the down side, to these eyes, is that it risks looking dated sooner than more conservative models. Bluetooth, navigation and class-exclusive heated rear seats are available. But what it may lack in eye-catching pizzazz it makes up for in features — in many cases, an Elantra compared with similarly equipped competitors will end up costing less. I purchased the vehicle for my daughter who was extremely pleased with the condition and look of the vehicle. But will there be a new Touring model? The Cruze also has very good safety scores.
On the American side of the battle, the Chevrolet Cruze once again vastly outpaced… The Chevrolet Cruze had a great five-month run as the king of the compact car castle. Our one caveat is that the engine can get a little buzzy when pushed on a grade or on the highway, but the shifts are smooth and the minor engine noise is a small price to pay for the savings you'll see at the gas pump. Inside, the Elantra combines traditional Hyundai swoopiness with some interesting new cues—specifically, the pinch point where the center console meets the rest of the dash, as well as the strongly hooded gauge cluster. The sedan also has a small turning radius, a valuable asset for city dwellers.
